International Home-Based Nursing

Survey 1 of International Home-Based Nursing Study: Information & Consent

Research Study to Guide the Development of
International Scope and Standards for Nurses Providing Care in People’s Homes

Introduction. The International Home Care Nurses Organization (IHCNO; www.ihcno.org) and the American Nurses Association (ANA) are conducting a series of surveys to guide the development of the new Home-Based Nursing: International Scope and Standards of Practice book. We are seeking participants from countries around the world who practice all types of healthcare services (preventive, acute, chronic or end-of-life) to people of all ages, in people’s homes.

Study Eligibility. If you read and write English, and you provide nursing care in people’s homes; or you supervise, educate, conduct research, or provide policies for those who do, we invite you to participate in the study.

Study Description. We compiled a list of home health nurses’ e-mails from the IHCNO database, published journal articles, contacts from conferences, and references from nurse colleagues. The study will include four surveys. Each survey will seek information about a different aspect of home-based nursing: 1) status of home-based nursing in your country, 2) scope of home-based nursing practice in your country; 3) recommendations for standards of practice, and 4) recommendations for competencies. After you complete a survey, in about 6 weeks you will receive a link to the next survey. We anticipate each survey will take about 20 minutes to complete. The survey linked to this page is the first of the four surveys. You may forward the link to this study to other nurses who are eligible and interested in the study.  Nurses who received the study link from a colleague can participate in all four surveys by sending an e-mail to marycnarayan@gmail.com and asking to be added to the study’s e-mail list.

Risks and Benefits. There are no foreseeable risks of participating in the study. There are no direct benefits to you as a participant, other than the opportunity to add your voice to the principles that will guide international home-based nursing practice.

Participants’ Rights. Your participation is voluntary, and you may withdraw from the study at any time and for any reason, without any penalty or cost to you. You can complete any or all surveys, or you can choose not to participate in any survey or to answer any question on a survey.

Confidentiality.  No personally identifiable information will be collected on the survey.  The research team will not be able to associate your name or e-mail with your survey. However, if you wish to be acknowledged as a contributor to the Home-Based Nursing: International Scope and Standards of Practice, click on the link at the bottom of the survey which takes you to a separate site, not associated with the survey, where you can provide your name and credentials.

Researchers:  Two IHCNO nurses are conducting this study.  Please contact them for any questions or concerns about the study:
Consent.  By completing and submitting the survey, you are indicating your consent to participate in the study.
